Rush - 2112
The first Rush album I owned was 2112. I had never heard it, but I had heard some stuff from them from the albums
I had borrow from my friend Jon, who was a big Rush fan. I took a leap of faith and investment my $12 for piece of warm vinyl.
Turns out, it was the album that helped me understand what a "concept album" was as well as "progressive rock".
Those two terms would become synonymous with Rush and two of my favorite terms.

I am not sure of the first time
that I heard Mr. Jones on the radio, but I have a clear memory of being at my friend Robert's house and watching the
video on MTV. Adam Duritz was a chunky white guy with dreadlocks that had absolutely no place on MTV, yet he
was giving a solid performance, dancing around like an overweight, over-aged idiot, waxing poetic and nostalgic.
He seemed to be sold on his own performance. His confidence made me listen closer.

From my perspective,
it seemed that music had a few bad years in the late 1980s. I can't recall any music produced during
that time worth mentioning here (with the exception of Guns 'n' Roses' Appetite for Destruction. The radio was still
being hammered by overplayed hair metal and what would soon become classic rock. Something other than Starbucks was brewing in the Pacific
Northwest, focused right around Seattle, that would put a new face on the world of music. This new face of music would have a name.
And that name would be "grunge", whatever the fuck that means.

In the summer of 1981, I bought my first album.
I had just turned fourteen. I was in summer school and hung around the older kids who smoked cigarettes and cut school.
One Friday after school, we were sitting on the grass in the park across the street from my school. "Hell's Bells", "Shoot To Thrill",
and "You Shook Me All Night Long" played through the tinny speakers of my friend's boombox. I listened. No music ever sounded more honest, more raw, or more relevant than those songs on that day. After a while, I asked what music was playing.
